I know, I know. A little late, much? These were taken during my visit to Lincoln Center for New York Fashion Week back in February! I can't tell you how exciting it was to simply be in the presence of impeccably stylish folks at this legendary venue (I had been to Lincoln Center previously for the New York City Ballet and the Metropolitan Opera but never for NYFW!). Oh and being photographed by countless photographers was pretty rad as well ;-)

Exciting news since my last update: I got a job in SoHo in February, and needless to say...my life has become even more fast-paced and busy. School, work, and most importantly, exploring New York City leaves me with little time to blog properly. I barely have enough time to sleep (can you say caramel macchiato?) or grocery shop. Luckily there's Duane Reade for quick breakfast purchases consisting of assorted instant oatmeal boxes and half gallons of milk. I wouldn't have it any other way...although I do wish I could blog more and share more of my amazing NYC adventures with y'all.

I've never felt so alive and exhausted all at once.

xoxo from NYC,
Jacket on or jacket off? Took my fav moto jacket off long enough to snap these pics in order to show the asymmetry of this chunky knit sweater I found for a great price in SoHo. Then quickly threw the jacket back on due to NYC's winter chill. Took my new Jeffrey Campbells out for a spin today, which are surprisingly comfortable, minus slight pinky toe squishing, but it could just be the way I was walking.
Playing around with a film camera in one of my favorite neighborhoods in NYC -- SoHo. Cobblestone streets, endless boutiques, street vendors selling everything from eclectic jewelry to art created out of NYC subway maps, the perfect mix of both designer + affordable shops, impeccably dressed people...need I list more reasons why I am completely enamored with this neighborhood? These photos were taken on a warm day (40 degrees!) last week. Had you asked me five months ago what I thought of any weather below 50 degrees, I would've responded with a shiver & a simple, "that's freezing!" Never did I think I'd ever use "40 degrees" & "warm" together in the same sentence.

I believe it's safe to say I've adjusted to the weather here...

It's been a few months and a couple of season changes since I last posted, hasn't it? (these photos were taken on Christmas Day in Central Park!) My apologies, dear readers. Life in the Big Apple has been a dream. Every day offers something new to see and experience. New York food, New York subways, New York shopping, New York sights, New York energy, New York state of mind -- I'm madly in love with this city. I'm exactly where I want to be. Oh & speaking of seasons...having lived in Hawai'i all of my life where the temperatures fluctuate year-round between 60s-80s, moving to New York City where four seasons exist was quite a change! Never in my life has seasonal dressing become so relevant! At times it poses a bit of a fashion challenge when temperatures dip below 20 & I'm scrambling to assemble an outfit that won't a.) cause me to suffer from hypothermia (my hands are usually the first to freeze!) and b.) cause me to resemble the Michelin man in horrid puffer coats (sorry, North Face). But hey, I love a challenge, specifically fashion-related ones. heheh.

Granted, I miss blogging terribly but life has been so fast paced lately that I'm hardly home & find little time to sit down and blog properly. I made a New Year's resolution about a month ago to make more of an effort to blog -- I promise to post as frequently as possible. I have been taking a multitude of photos since I moved here, however. I'd say I've filled up about three SD memory cards or so...

I really want to get back into the swing of blogging & sharing my personal style & snapshots of NYC life with all of you!
Hello, lovers! I know, I know. I've been incredibly inactive here. My apologies! I moved to New York City for school on August 20th. Since then, my life has been jam-packed with excitement every single day, to say the least. The energy in this city is electrifying. I love how there’s something new to see and experience everywhere I go. The subways, the buses, the hustle & bustle — I’m completely enamored with this gorgeous city and consider myself unbelievably fortunate to be here. Have you ever wanted something so badly & dreamed about it for years upon years then finally had it grasped firmly in your plum-manicured hands only to be overcome with a pleasantly overwhelmed sensation every night? It's been difficult to fall asleep on certain nights due to this inexplicable excitement (and from late night/early morning escapades around Manhattan lol).

These photos were taken back in August when I first arrived here, on several sweltering-hot summer days in the city. I've got many more photos to share, so stay tuned!
Here's a simple, seemingly breezy outfit I threw together in the early morning, before the weather hit mid-80s, which was about the temperature in town when these photos were snapped. Needless to say, I was melting in this unforgiving sweater!

I have two weeks left in Hawaii before my big move to New York City. Many preparations are still in order before I can step foot on that plane. Starting with packing of course, which I have yet to begin. I'll be staying in San Francisco for a week en route to New York City, so please feel free to recommend any and all notable places I must visit in both cities, as it'll be my first time in both the City by the Bay and the Big Apple!
One afternoon while cleaning my closet, much to my delight, I found a bag of unused fabric. Another afternoon of cutting, sewing, and stitching yielded this floral skirt, a welcome addition to my summer wardrobe. The seashell bar and purple stone rings were designed by me and assembled with the help of a crafty friend. I also have my friend Jill of Oh My Manicure to thank for my super cute nails, the color of which I'm obsessed with! I must purchase a bottle of my own.
I'm excited to be featured in the latest issue of DISfunkshion Magazine alongside other lovely fashion bloggers! I'm not gonna lie - I was tempted to purchase every issue on the stand at Walmart, it being my first magazine feature and all, but decided against it, hehe. On the cover of this issue is none other than Alyssa Milano, the stunning actress after whom I was named.

The quality of these scans don't do the vivid colors of this beautiful spread justice. Regardless of that, thank you, DISfunkshion - I'm honored to have my style featured in Hawaii's premiere fashion, lifestyle, art, and women's issues magazine!
It feels great to be blogging again! Two weeks ago I finished up my toughest semester yet and last week, began summer school (just one class!). Today was a lovely afternoon spent catching up with my best friend and her new puppy! We hit up Goodwill and our other usual spots around town. I'm starting to feel like myself again - relaxed, enthusiastic, and hopeful (a few traits that somehow manage to get lost between the mountains of studying, papers, and exams during the semester). Summer vacation tends to have this calming effect on me...but sometimes an anxiety-inducing effect as well if I feel unproductive. Luckily this summer I am taking a Career Development class and have much to prepare for in the coming months.

And now for the exciting news I mentioned in my last post...I will be moving to New York City in August to continue my college studies as an exchange student! This process is still in the works as I have many things to do in preparation such as registering for classes, securing my finances, etc. etc. etc. But I can honestly say that I'm incredibly optimistic for the future. And as always, thank you, dear readers, for your sweet comments!
Dearest followers,

I do apologize for my extended leave of absence. These quick shots were taken last month (I know, I know). I feel awful about neglecting my blog but in all honesty, this semester has been the craziest thus far. I've got two more weeks of late night studying/cramming, presentations, and final papers to complete and then I can devote all my attention to my blog again. I also have some great news to share! I'll explain more once everything is finalized. Thank you for sticking with me, despite my lack of updates. You're all lovely!

With all my love,
Alyssa

P.S. How stoked are you now that Spring is finally here?!
January may already be coming to an end but this month marks a whole year since I first started alyssa, ce soir! Thank you SO MUCH, dear readers, for sticking with me and continuing to follow me. I truly enjoy sharing my personal style with all of you. Your kind words and support all year make this whole blogging experience fun and special.

I do apologize for the slowdown in posts lately. These days I feel like I'm going through a dry spell void of any inspiration. I am positive this phase will pass, however! Here's what I threw together the other day when I was running late for class and was forced to grab the nearest clean garment I could find as I made a mad dash for the door. The result? A haphazard ensemble just shy of sloppy if not for my new favorite white button-up. Never underestimate the power of a classic white button-up and its saving grace. (Note: I didn't actually wear the floppy hat to class, though. Doing so would've greatly impaired the vision of those unfortunate enough to sit behind me during lecture!)
If you've been keeping up with my blog this year you may have noticed my penchant for floppy hats, faux fur, chunky wedges, and stacked bangles, to name a few. I suppose it's fitting, then, that I've (unintentionally!) incorporated all of the above in my final outfit post of 2010.

It's 5 p.m. here in Hawaii and in a few hours some friends and I will bid adieu to yet another fine year. The folks in my neighborhood are already lighting up fireworks which is only fueling my anticipation for the night and the coming year. I was going to write an overly sentimental novel reflecting on how amazing this past year was and how much I've grown as a person, etc. etc., but instead I'll just state that the future looks promising and I absolutely cannot wait to see what 2011 has in store! Hope you all have/had a wonderful new year's celebration!
Happy Holidays, everyone! I've been living in easy outfits like this for the past two weeks. Found this random leopard print scarf in the depths of my dresser drawers and flung it haphazardly over my shoulders merely seconds before my photographer/partner-in-crime showed up in my driveway to pick me up that afternoon.

I just got home from Black Friday shopping, although I'd hardly consider it "shopping" as I've come home empty-handed (okay, maybe not entirely empty-handed -- a Tommy Hilfiger "super soft plush throw" blanket, a memory foam mattress topper, and lacy underthings). Luckily, the internet exists and my online haunts are fully stocked with everything I've been deprived of, i.e.; new purses, shoes and outerwear. Indulgence is calling my name...
...a floppy hat, it seems. But what can I say? They are my weakness! Bare legs seemed appropriate given the unusually warm weather that afternoon. Consistent Fall weather patterns in Hawaii? Unheard of. Please excuse my short absence from blogging -- midterms + papers have consumed my life these past two weeks. Now introducing my latest shoe purchase: Jeffrey Campbell clog wedges. Would you believe me if I said I found them at a deeply discounted price of $50? Mega score! In the past I'd turn my nose up at mixing silver + gold jewelry together; as of late, I find no problem with it, as exhibited here. Hooray for experimenting.
Happy Halloween weekend to all of you who celebrate it & thank you to all of my readers who continually stop by and grace me with your kind words -- I really appreciate it!
Channeling minimalist tendencies with solid shades and a pop of camel and candy apple red nails for unexpected splashes of color. This just may be my new favorite cardigan. I nearly died, not only because I found it at Ross Dress for Less, of all places, but when I noticed that the attached fur stole is also detachable. And for under $30, it just couldn't get any better. Cue the cable knits & fur...Fall has arrived.
Now Playing: "Voodoo Child" by Jimi Hendrix (totally would have worn this outfit to one of his concerts in the late 60's)
Slowly but surely, I'm beginning to shed my summer skin. Today's cool weather allowed me to pile on fur + this chunky knit cardi that Kash sent to me -- two items I've harbored in my closet for weeks, due to those sweltering summer months. I'm not much of a denim jeans kind of gal (think skinnies, bootcut, and the like. It's been over 9 months since I last wore a pair), so traipsing around town in these flares was a nice departure from my jeans-deprived life. Not to mention, the comfort level of these bell bottoms are pleasantly high. Pretty sure I've been converted to a jeans kind of gal after I found this pair at Ross. Well, a flare jeans gal, anyway. I'm now in hot pursuit of the next pair I can get my hands on, preferably in either a super dark wash or light wash...
On the prowl for the perfect (faux) fur coat that is somehow light enough for Hawaii's sporadic humidity yet voluminous enough to bundle me up in bliss. Could such an ideal article of clothing exist? Attending my town's annual massive free concert festival last Saturday has rendered me sickly and unable to function, much less photograph my outfits. I promise to document my latest wares as soon as I'm fully recovered. In any case, j'étudie le français tous les jours. Parce que j'ai cours de français tous les matins. Native speakers, feel free to correct my grammar if necessary -- I'm still a novice. Bisous!

Kept it très casual yesterday for a sunkissed afternoon of downtown traipsing, Kava bar drinking, and county fair wanderings. The label on my cropped tee reads, "twentyone" yet I found the top at a local mall store...for $1.94. Get this: no such Forever21 stores exist in my town. How strange. I'm assuming this top, given its minor flaw (bleeding blue dye from one of the stripes), was tossed into a pile of rejects and somehow ended up in said mall store at a heavily discounted price. I'm not complaining, though, trust me. I have a couple of pairs of these Levi's 501 shorts (hence, why you've seen them on the blog quite often) and they're definitely one of my favorite go-to pieces whenever I want to add a touch of grunge to an outfit. The canvas bag is a souvenir that my boyfriend's grandmother brought back from le Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle in Paris. Très cool!
Schoolwork has taken over my life these past two weeks and has impaired my ability to blog. If you saw my planner with its sporadic 'to-do' notes and ramblings of sorts, you'd believe me. Finally found a pocket of time to snap some photos today.

I definitely feel like chambray + camel hues were meant to be. I found this ultra-soft BCBGMaxAzria cardigan at -- you guessed it, my local Goodwill. I fell in love with the gorgeous camel and moreover, with the price -- $3.99, can't go wrong with that.

My local Goodwill never fails me. I found this crochet blouse there last Sunday -- probably the best day to shop, in my humble opinion. My love for this fun little number is amplified not only by its color (the counterpart to my white crochet), but by its interesting shape. The bell sleeves induced exaggerated arm movements throughout the day in order to achieve the full effect of said sleeves. After countless uses, my good old floppy hat is beginning to rip. Luckily, it's nothing a needle and thread can't fix. I suppose that will be my project tomorrow...along with hemming up a $6 dress I found today (knee-grazing hemlines are hardly flattering on me). Somewhere in between all of that, I'll find the time to read my textbooks.

Once again, I must thank my dear friend Logan for taking my pictures!

On an end note, I also found a far out pair of flared jeans today. It may sound silly, but I feel a little more complete. I'm ready, now more than ever, to embrace my inner bohemian, ha ha.
I was delighted to receive a package in the mail the other day from my boyfriend in San Francisco. The contents of which contained this adorable H&M floppy hat (they are my weakness, as you may have noticed!) and this neat H&M necklace, among other treats. Today I spent some quality time with one of my good friends Logan, who recently moved back to Hawai'i from Los Angeles and who also took these pictures. Thanks, girl! I had to buy the cream version of the shorts from my last post -- they were simply too rad to pass up.
Finally -- the remote control for my camera has arrived from eBay; thus, an updated outfit post. A new semester has begun and I am already swamped with copious readings and assignments. Sleep will soon become a foreign concept. Anyway, I found this great knit blouse at Goodwill and these chunky BCBGeneration wedges on clearance at Ross for $19.99. Nothing like a bargain or two to brighten up my day and alleviate my end-of-summer woes. Summer vacation may officially be over for me, but that won't stop me from dressing in an ensemble suitable for the warm season. Enter these denim floral shorts. Short and sweet they are.
